The Wong Way

Back in July 2006, I bought my first digital SLR camera. The very next day, I brought it with me to Siren Festival in Coney Island. Although the shots from that concert didn't turn out too hot - too far away, too much of a novice with the camera - I wasn't deterred from future attempts at concert shooting. Ultimately, I decided to start a musicblog, titled The Wong Way, featuring photos I took from the concerts I went to. It ran regularly from July 2006 to December 2006 and while I'd like to start it back up some day, I prefer to just enjoy concerts from the sidelines. But who knows what the future will bring, right?

Gin Blossoms @ Apple Store SoHo, NYC 28.08.2006

Setlist:
Follow You Down / Allison Road / Learning the Hard Way / Found Out About You / Long Time Gone / Super Girl / Lost Horizons Heart Shaped Locket / Til I Hear It From You /// Hey Jealousy

The Gin Blossoms played a free show at the Apple Store in SoHo in support of the release of their first album in a decade. I know that this is a departure from the usual type of concerts I go to but I have to confess to being a fan of their music during their heyday – what can I say, I was a teenager.

Based on how much fun I had at this show, I’m inclined to say that I still am a teenager. Despite the fact that they had essentially been on the shelf for the better part of the last ten years, they haven’t skipped a beat. They played a few songs off their new album but they devoted a good chunk of the setlist to their hit singles. Lead vocalist Robin Wilson had a blast playing at the Apple Store, making references to his computer being worked on at the Genius Bar and openly pleading for one of the t-shirts that the geniuses wear in exchange for performing “Hey Jealousy.” Speaking of “Hey Jealousy”, Robin sensed that there would be a number of people in the audience that would only know of that song and he assured them that they would get to that song after they got through some new stuff – sure enough, they closed with it.

I promise I’ll get back to the indie goodness in the next post. I just wanted to indulge myself in some nostalgia.
