The Wong Way

Back in July 2006, I bought my first digital SLR camera. The very next day, I brought it with me to Siren Festival in Coney Island. Although the shots from that concert didn't turn out too hot - too far away, too much of a novice with the camera - I wasn't deterred from future attempts at concert shooting. Ultimately, I decided to start a musicblog, titled The Wong Way, featuring photos I took from the concerts I went to. It ran regularly from July 2006 to December 2006 and while I'd like to start it back up some day, I prefer to just enjoy concerts from the sidelines. But who knows what the future will bring, right?

Gnarls Barkley @ Nokia Theatre, NYC 26.09.2006

Gnarls Barkley played a “secret” show at Nokia Theatre on Tuesday night. Right from the start, you had to know the crowd was in for a special night when none other than David Bowie showed up to introduce Gnarls Barkley. How cool is that? David-frickin’-Bowie! And here I thought he was only available to introduce the Arcade Fire.

The theme of the night was “Karate Kid” – that or “Kung Fu Hustle.” I was a little confused because Cee-lo said they were Daniel-san but then referenced Hustle later in the show. Not that any of that matters – it’s cute that they try to perpetuate the notion that they’re a Gnarls Barkley cover band with their various costumes when they tour but I’d recommend ditching that aspect if they ever tour again. Just the cover band myth though – I love the costumes.

No setlist but they ripped through the entire “St. Elsewhere” album with a few covers thrown in – one being a surprisingly good cover of The Doors. These guys are awesome – with a full band backing them up, backup singers, and a string section, they put on an old-fashioned big-time rock’n'roll show.
