Cold War Kids :: Loyalty to Loyalty
Two full-length albums in and it’s becoming painfully obvious that they can’t recapture whatever they had in their EPs that made them so much fun to listen to in the first place.

Death Cab for Cutie :: Narrow Stairs
For what it’s worth, it’s a better album than Plans, though not by much. How much longer can these guys coast on having been featured on The OC?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
David Fincher helms an emotional tale that would stand alone without the gimmickry of CGI – but it’s the CGI and the aging-in-reverse story that will merit the film an Oscar nomination.

Milk
If it weren’t for Mickey Rourke’s turn in The Wrestler, Sean Penn would win another Best Actor Oscar. Director Gus Van Sant did an excellent job, especially in the skilled usage of archived clips and filming the cast to recreate others; it’s the little things that elevates the film above the generic biopic. Don’t know who of the three supporting actors – Josh Brolin seems like a given – will get a nomination but it’d be nice to see Emile Hirsch get one over James Franco.

Los Campesinos! :: We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed
Los Campesinos! released their debut album Hold on Now, Youngster… in early 2008 so it was an absolute surprise to find out that they had also released their follow-up the same year. It would be a stretch to say that this is an album of leftovers but We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed sounds so similar to, yet noticeably weaker than, their debut that it’s hard not to think it.

The Year in Entertainment – 2008
For this year’s best of lists in music, movies, and television, I’ve decided to change things up by ordering them in alphabetical order rather than the usual count down to the best. It’s not a statement on how even each entry is on the list – I’m just lazy.
