Belgium Comes to Cooperstown, Part 2

After a long day volunteering at the festival, it was time to head back to the camp site and just relax.

Belgium Comes to Cooperstown, Part 1

Every late July/early August, Brewery Ommegang holds their annual Belhium Comes to Cooperstown event – a weekend of Belgian-style beer tasting, camping, and massive late night drinking. We lucked out that weekend with mild temperatures and, more importantly, less than oppressive humidity. As volunteers, we got to attend for free and, to top it off, we all got a case of beer for two-hour shifts!

Great American Beer Fest

Back in October, I went with Aaron, Gordon, and Justin to Denver to attend every beer fan’s personal mecca – the Great American Beer Fest.

American Craft Beer Fest

In order to bring craft beer to the masses, Beer Advocate held the American Craft Beer Fest at the Seaport World Trade Center. With the move from the much smaller Cyclorama came a larger crowd – from the old limit of 1,200 to up to 5,000 people at each session. The result was a lot more beer being served but a lot more douchebags showing up to get their drink on with little regard to appreciating beer – in effect, not respecting beer as the Alström brothers would want us all to do. Stupidity aside, we managed to have a good time, sampling the beers the brewers presented. I’ll look forward to their return to the Cyclorama for the Belgian Beer Fest in September.

1st Manhattan Cask Ale Festival

This past weekend was the 1st Manhattan Cask Ale Festival at Chelsea Brewing Company. Like other cask festivals in NYC, this was organized by cask expert Alex Hall. Justin came down from Boston on Friday and we went to check it out.

‘Cask Head’ Cask Ale Festival

This past weekend was the ‘Cask Head’ Cask Ale Festival at The Brazen Head in Brooklyn. At $4 for a 10-ounce sample or, if one were feeling bold, $6 for a 16-ounce sample, there was plenty of beer coming out of those casks. Despite some of the more-anticipated casks not making it to the event, Alex Hall did an excellent job at lining up some top-notch beers for the festival.

Extreme Beer Fest

This past Saturday was our second session at the Extreme Beer Fest. Sorry, no photos of Jim Koch this time as we were too busy trying to get to as many samples in three-plus hours. However, we did manage to stop by a panel that he was on and can attest that he was just as drunk as the night before.

Extreme Beer Fest – Night of the Barrels

This past weekend, I went with a couple of friends to Beer Advocate’s Extreme Beer Fest. We attended two sessions – the photos in this post are from the first session. By the time Jess took this photo of us with Jim Koch (center), the founder of the Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams), we’d all had quite a bit to drink. It appeared that Jim had more than we had – at the very least, he was definitely further gone than we were. Who cares – it’s Jim fuckin’ Koch!

Belgian Beer Fest – Night of the Funk

A few weeks back, I went with a couple of friends to Beer Advocate’s Return of the Belgian Beer Fest. We passed on the main Saturday sessions, choosing to plunk down our money for the more expensive, but much more enjoyable Night of the Funk.

New York Brewfest

A little over a week ago, Susan and I headed out to South Street Seaport for the 2nd annual New York Brewfest. Five hours, lots of brewers, and a free commemorative (real) tasting glass – how could it be anything but good?

I wasn’t sorely mistaken on that point but I wasn’t too far away from feeling that way.
