Hunka-Hunka Burnin’ Beer-B-Q 5, Part 1

Every year, a bunch of guys who went to Binghamton University together get together and throw a massive party. The first year, in 2003, was hosted by Jeremy and Justin in the Syracuse region. The following two gatherings, now hosted by Aaron and Jeremy, took place in Fahnestock State Park in Carmel. In 2007, the party moved to Applewood Estates and it was the best one yet. No longer restrained by having to grill in a public park, far away from any base of operations, we were able to take on a more ambitious offering of food. The trend continued this past summer at the fifth Hunka Hunka, our second and final bash at Applewood.

American Craft Beer Fest

In order to bring craft beer to the masses, Beer Advocate held the American Craft Beer Fest at the Seaport World Trade Center. With the move from the much smaller Cyclorama came a larger crowd – from the old limit of 1,200 to up to 5,000 people at each session. The result was a lot more beer being served but a lot more douchebags showing up to get their drink on with little regard to appreciating beer – in effect, not respecting beer as the Alström brothers would want us all to do. Stupidity aside, we managed to have a good time, sampling the beers the brewers presented. I’ll look forward to their return to the Cyclorama for the Belgian Beer Fest in September.

Applewood Brewing Weekend, Part 3

Concluding the set of photos from the brewing weekend. After draining the water from the mash tun…

…the hops can be added and it’s back to cooking again.

The cooking done, it’s time to cool the mixture down as quickly as possible – enter the wort chiller.

A second batch of beer would be made from the grains in the mash tun. Gordon adds the hops for this batch.

After several hours, the cooking’s done and now it’s time for the yeast to work its magic.

Applewood Brewing Weekend, Part 2

Continuing with photos from the brewing weekend. Gordon and Justin are checking the temperature of the water in the mash tun, waiting for it to drop to the right temperature.

Water was leaking from the mash tun so Jeremy had to tighten some stuff up.

With the leakage problem solved, Justin pours the grain into the mash tun while Gordon stirs to incorporate it into the water.

Gotta drink a beer while brewing.
